Generation
Vena’s powerful generation tools help you create clinical documentation quickly and efficiently. This section covers how to use generations in sessions, manage templates, and work with forms.
Using Generations in Sessions
The Generation tab in each session is where you can create clinical documentation using templates, forms, or from scratch.
Creating a Generation
- Open a session and navigate to the Generations tab
- Use the Choose Template dropdown to select from:
- Built-in templates
- Your custom templates
- PDF forms
- Blank template (if you don’t want to use a template)
- In the context textbox below, add any specific instructions such as:
- “Generate my output in English” or “Generate in French”
- “Ensure titles are bolded”
- Any formatting or style preferences
- These instructions should relate to the format or generation of content
- Click the Generate button
- Your generated content will appear in the output section
Working with Generated Content
Once you’ve generated content, you can:
- View the generation full-screen by clicking the expand icon above it
- Edit the generated text directly:
- Type to modify content
- Use formatting tools (bold, headers, etc.)
- Use the microphone icon on the bottom right to dictate into text fields
- For PDF forms:
- Fill in editable fields by typing
- Note that editor formatting features are not available in PDFs
Exporting Generated Content
You can export your generated content in several ways:
- For text content:
- Use the export icon to copy text with or without formatting
- For PDF documents:
- In Chrome: Use the download button that appears on the PDF
- In Safari: Scroll to the bottom of the page, hover over the PDF, and use the download icon
Managing Multiple Generations
You can create and manage multiple generations within a session:
- Click New Generation to create a new document while keeping your existing ones
- Use the Generations section to view all documents created in this session
- For each generation in the list, you can:
- Click to view the generation
- Use the three-dot menu to edit the title or delete the generation
Modifying Existing Generations
If you need to update a generation based on new information:
- Click the Modify button on an existing generation, or
- Select any generation from the Generations list and click Modify
- This is particularly useful when you have:
- Added new notes
- Added new transcription in the Notes tab
- Need to change your context or instructions
- Update your context as needed
- Click Generate to update the content
Creating and Managing Custom Templates
Custom templates allow you to create reusable document structures tailored to your practice.
Creating a Custom Template
There are two ways to create a custom template:

Create from scratch:
- Navigate to the Templates tab from the dashboard
- Click Create Template
- Use the editor to design your template
- Save your template

Upload a Word document:
- Navigate to the Templates tab
- Click Create Template
- Select the option to upload a Word document (.docx format)
- Upload your file
- Make any needed adjustments
- Save your template
Managing Custom Templates
From the Templates section, you can:
- View all your templates in the table
- Click View Template on any template to see its contents
- Edit a template by clicking View Template and then making changes
- Remember to click Save after making any edits
- Your custom templates will be available in the Template dropdown in the Generations tab
Managing PDF Forms
Vena allows you to upload and use editable PDF forms in your documentation workflow.
Adding PDF Forms
- Navigate to the Forms tab from the dashboard
- Click Add Form
- Upload an editable PDF file
- Ensure the PDF has editable fields
- Give your form a title
- Click Save
Managing Forms
From the Forms section, you can:
- View all your uploaded forms
- Delete a form using the delete icon
- Edit the form title by:
- Clicking View Form
- Using the pen icon at the top of the form
- Updating the title
- Saving your changes
Using Forms in Generations
Your PDF forms will be available just like templates:
- In the session’s Generation tab, open the Choose Template dropdown
- Your PDF forms will be listed along with templates
- Select the form you want to use
- After generation, fill in the editable fields by typing directly into them
